Art Beat '99 Will Make Your Life Worth Living

If this world has got you down the world with traffic jams, crying kids and VISA bills Portland Community College has a temporary escape into a land of beauty, artistic grandeur and soothing imagery waiting for you. What’s more, it’s free!
Put away the aspirin and find your way to Art Beat ’99, set to take over PCC campuses May 10-14. This year’s multi-campus event represents the 13th time the college has brought local, regional and national visual and performing artists onto its main campuses to expose you and others like you to unique visions and versions of our world.
Photography is the theme for Art Beat ’99, with the work and wisdom of Portland photographer Terry Toedtemeier taking center stage. The professional photographer, curator and geologist will show slides of his work and discuss his perceptions of nature and art on Tuesday, May 11 at the Sylvania Campus from noon to 1 p.m. in the ST Building, Room 101; Thursday, May 13 at the Cascade Campus from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m.; and on Friday, May 14 in the Rock Creek Campus Forum Theater from noon to 1 p.m. Toedtemeier’s work "Cascade Head from Sea Cave, Lincoln County, Oregon, 1992," is featured on this year’s Art Beat `99 poster.
In addition to Toedtemeier’s expertise, PCC will shine a light on youthful exuberance with a Student Photograph Display on all of the college’s main campuses throughout the week.
But pictures only tell part of the story this year. Portland Hip-Hop artists will raise PCC roofs, the Second Annual Art Beat Independent Film Festival is sure to broaden some minds, and tap dancer extraordinaire Terry Brock will help everybody cut footloose.
Prepare to put all five senses to work with an international food fair at the Sylvania Campus, visual delights such as sculptures, paintings and the like at all campuses, and vibrant performance events such as the boldly athletic dancing troupe BODYVOX, the West African drummer and dancer Nii Ardey Allotey, a full marching Samba band and a puppet show for children, just to name a few will be represented during the college’s annual art explosion.
"Art Beat provides an opportunity for people to see performers and artists they wouldn’t otherwise see," said event publicity chair and PCC English instructor Sharon Anthony. "It brings these artists to their neighborhoods and their communities.
"It will also show them what an important place
PCC is in their community," Anthony continued.

Art Beat T-shirts with Toedtemeier’s poster photo will be on sale at Art Beat locations for $10. Posters will be available for free at Art Beat, while supplies last.
The Cascade Campus is located at 705 N. Killingsworth in North Portland. PCC Rock Creek is located at 17705 N.W. Springville Road in the Rock Creek area between Beaverton and Aloha. Those art lovers attending events at PCC’s Sylvania Campus will find them at 12000 S.W. 49th Ave.
