Bioscience Technology short term training available
Portland Community College, in conjunction with a bioscience consortium that includes Genetech, HemCon, Welch Allyn and Precision Wire, is offering a 10-week, 13-credit-hour training program. The Bioscience Technology certificate of completion will train people in skills specific to industry hiring needs for entry-level operator positions. Genentech, the San Francisco-based pharmaceuticals development and manufacturing company, will open its new plant in Hillsboro in late 2008 and will be seeking trained and qualified workers. A limited number of scholarships, funded by the partner bioscience companies, will be available for qualifying students. Marneet Lewis goes to Washington
Students have graduated from Portland Community College and gone on to momentous things, but rarely has it happened as quickly as it has for Marneet Lewis. The 2008 graduate from the Cascade Campus on North Killingworth Street is serving as an intern in U.S. Sen. Ted Kennedy’s (Mass.) office for the Senate Committee on Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions (HELP) in Washington, D.C. Lewis’ selection as a community college student is rare – she is one of only eight students selected for the summer congressional internship program and only community college student in a very competitive field of candidates.
