Donations needed to stock food canteens around PCC

Photos and Story by

PCC students are raising awareness of their food canteens set up around the college district to benefit in-need students. The ASPCC project aided more than 130 students since it began in the fall of 2011. However, the student organizers struggle to keep up with the demand for the resource and need the PCC community’s help.

The food canteens accept non-perishable food, hygiene, baby items, and money. They are open from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. Locations include “The Food Nook,” Room 03, Student Center, Cascade Campus; “The Rock Creek Canteen,” Room 103, Building 2, Rock Creek Campus; “ASPCC Food Pantry,” Room 151, Mt. Tabor Hall, Southeast Center; and “The Food Canteen,” Room 102, College Center Building, Sylvania Campus.

The students that run the canteens say it’s a great resource for fellow students that need it and fills a hunger gap on the campuses. Students who want to use the canteen simply show their PCC I.D. and can use it up to three times per term.

Currently, ASPCC is running two drives this winter term – “Food For Fines,” where students and staff can turn in cans of food in lieu of paying library fines, and “New Year’s Resolution” where people are encouraged to clean out their pantries at home and donate all unused non-perishable food, hygiene, and baby items.

For more information, contact ASPCC at a campus near you by visiting the donation page.

I would love to help with this! Please let me know if Portland Community College is still receiving donations. I need to know asap, so that I can let my supervisor know, and whether or not I can do it. This is the first college I have ever heard doing something this and I would love to help out any way I can.
