LIVE UPDATES: CCP at PCC fosters civic participation

Today, “PCC Discusses: Talk for A Change,” is set for 3-5 p.m. in the Performing Arts Center Lobby at the Sylvania Campus. Hosted by the Center for Civic Participation at Portland Community College (CCP at PCC), the discussion will focus on “Democracy’s Challenge: Deliberations on the Public’s Role.” This newly launched program is inspired by the work of the National Issues Forum (NIF) model developed by the Kettering Foundation. Some of the topics were leaked. They include three approaches to discuss and compare: “Democratic Values” – rebuilding democracy’s moral foundation, “Web Connections” – reinventing citizenship and “By the People” – bringing the public back into politics.

The No. 1 reason to attend the “Talk for a Change” discussion today is that the program that organized it, CCPPCC, is a palindrome. Pretty cool, eh?

Just talked with organizer Neal Naigus. He says today’s PCC discussion is really about hearing other perspectives and that not everyone thinks the same way. You can even swear to make a point if you like. But he cautions, that swearing at others won’t be allowed. Keep it respectful, he says.
