PCC turns out a big crowd for legislature’s budget committee

Photos and Story by

Portland Community College’s Sylvania Campus hosted more than 500 community members on Saturday, Feb. 11 for the Joint Committee on Ways and Means roadshow.

Staffed by the Legislative Fiscal Office, the Joint Committee on Ways and Means is the legislative appropriations committee that determines state budget policy. It is a large committee of both Senate and House members and which employs six to eight subcommittees to facilitate adoption of a biennial budget.

Currently the Legislature is facing a $1.8 billion shortfall for the 2015-17 biennium and the road show allows the public to comment on potential cuts. The committee travels across the state to hear from the community. PCC Sylvania was the second stop of the seven-city roadshow.

While education was a major theme in the standing-room-only crowd that packed into Sylvania’s College Center building, transportation, disability services, public health and veterans services, also gathered crowds at the event.

PCC had the largest turnout with more than 75 supporters in attendance.
