PCC Graduate Wins Publishing Award

Photos and Story by

Jean Rust, a June 1996 graduate of the Nursing program at Portland Community College, has won the National Student Nursing Association/Springhouse Publishing Scholarship Award for her essay, "The Nurse I Admire Most." Rust is a resident of Southeast Portland.

Her essay tells the story of how her dream of being a nurse resulted from the nursing care she received following her experience of being severely burned as a child. The memory of her nurse remained with her as an inspiration, and in later years, by coincidence, she was able to provide long-term nursing care for the woman who had so impressed her when she was a 10-year-old girl.

Rust’s essay was reproduced in "Imprint," a magazine for student nurses published by NSNA, and will be featured also in "Nursing ’96," a Springhouse publication, to appear in April 1997.

Rust, 43, chose nursing for her second career. She was formerly a special education assistant with Portland Public Schools for 12 years.

The mother of two grown daughters, Rust is now working as a registered nurse at Woodland Park Hospital. She plans to continue her education toward a bachelor of science in nursing degree.
