Two PCC Ophthalmic Technology Students Win Awards

Photos and Story by

Two students in the Portland Community College Ophthalmic Technology program have been awarded $1500 each from the Joint Commission on Allied Health Personnel in Ophthalmology.

Anne Marie Wittmayer, 28, of Southeast Portland, and Tia Kuhs, 21, of Grants Pass, Ore., are both in their second year of the Cascade Campus health professions program.

The JCAHPO organization, based in St. Paul, Minn., made the awards to Wittmayer and Kuhs for tuition and fees for the 1996-97 school year. A total of 29 students in the U.S. and Canada received the awards.

Wittmayer is a single mother with one son who became interested in ophthalmology because of eye care she herself has received. Kuhs entered the field after being introduced to the work by a family friend in her home town of Grants Pass, where she intends to return after graduation.
