PCC to Provide Educational Services to Klamath Falls

Photos and Story by

The Portland Community College Board of Directors June 19 gave tentative approval for Portland to provide contracted educational services to Klamath Community College.

Under state law, Klamath Community College must contract with another college to provide educational services to its students until it reaches an annual enrollment of at least 1,000 full-time students. In its first year of operation, Klamath contracted with Rogue Community College.

Portland Community College currently provides educational services to three other small community colleges: Columbia Gorge, Tillamook and Oregon Coast. These colleges, and Klamath, hire their own faculty and other staff, but use curriculum developed by Portland. Each of the contracting colleges has its own Board of Directors and in most other aspects operates as an independent college, but obtains its accreditation status through Portland Community College.

PCC President Dan Moriarty said, "It makes sense for us to work with Klamath because we have staff experienced in these contractual agreements with other colleges. I am confident that we will have a good working relationship and that this arrangement will benefit students in Klamath Falls."

Details of the arrangement are not final but it is expected the contract will begin Fall Term 1997. The PCC Board is slated to formally approve the contract at its July 17 meeting.
