Manca Exhibit at PCC Features Dreamlike Works

Photos and Story by

An exhibit of mixed media constructions by Portland artist Gabriel Manca will open on Jan. 15 at Northview Gallery, on the Sylvania Campus of Portland Community College in Southwest Portland.

Manca creates cryptic narratives through manipulating found objects. Taking the form of wall hanging, mixed media sculptures, he creates theatrical settings in which carved and painted figures interact with other objects, leaving it to the viewer to provide a resolution.

These tableaux are uniquely presented – often using objects like old pillows, pie pans and windows as framing devices. Based upon the artist’s impression of people and situations, Manca accompanies each work with a free-associative poem which helps provide access to these dreamlike works.

Manca studied sculpture at Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland and is currently represented in Portland by Froelick Adelhart Gallery, 817 S.W. Second Ave., where he has a concurrent showing.

The exhibit runs through Feb. 13. Northview Gallery is located Room 214, CT Building, PCC Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Avenue. The gallery is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, call 977-4264.
