Manca Displays Dreamlike Works at PCC Sylvania

Photos and Story by

A gallery talk and reception for local artist Gabriel Manca will be held on Tuesday, Jan. 20 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Northview Gallery on Portland Community College’s Sylvania Campus in Southwest Portland. The exhibit is free and the public is welcome.

Portland artist Gabriel Manca creates cryptic narratives through manipulating found objects. Taking the form of wall hanging, mixed media sculptures, he creates theatrical setting in which carved and painted figures interact with other objects, leaving it to the viewer to provide his or her own resolution.

In this show of recent work, these tableaux are uniquely presented – often using objects like old pillows, pie pans and windows as framing devices. Each work is accompanied by a free-associative poem, which helps provide access to these dreamlike works.

Manca, who lives in Southeast Portland, studied sculpture at Pacific Northwest College of Art in Portland. Concurrently, he will also be showing work at the downtown Froelick Adelhart Gallery, 817 S.W. Second Ave.

Northview Gallery is located in CT (Communication Technology) Building, Room 214, on PCC’s Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. The exhibit runs through Feb. 13. Admission is free. Gallery hours are Monday through Friday,

8 a.m. to 4 p.m. For more information, call 977-4264.
