Cascade Art Student's Work Featured on Coffee Calendar

Photos and Story by

If Southeast Portland’s Hawthorne Coffee Merchant is where you go to fuel up before starting the day, wipe the sleep out of your eyes and fix them on the business’ new calendar for 1999.

Portland Community College art student Rebecca Michie is responsible for the ethereal beauty of "Tea Dreams," the watercolor art that graces the Hawthorne Coffee Merchant’s 1999 promotional calendar. The person who helped Michie’s work get there was art instructor Steve Soihl, who teaches at Cascade Campus.

"I believe the selection of my work for the calendar is a direct result of my watercolor classes with Stephan Soihl," Michie, a Northeast Portland resident, wrote in a letter to Soihl’s boss, Cascade Campus Dean of Instruction Charlie Sieracki. "He is patient, sensitive to the differences in abilities and interests of his students and supportive of everyone.

"He is technically very skilled and has the unusual ability of being able to transmit his knowledge to others."

To see what quality instruction, a great student and a partnership with a local business can achieve, stop by the Hawthorne Coffee Merchant at 3562 S.E. Hawthorne Blvd.
