Resignation of Saltzman from PCC Board Leaves Vacancy

Photos and Story by

Portland Community College board member Dan Saltzman announced earlier this month that he will step down from his position effective Jan. 31 to focus all of his time and energy on his new job as a Portland city commissioner.

"I have very much enjoyed serving with you for 10 years," Saltzman wrote in his resignation letter to fellow board members and PCC President Daniel Moriarty. "I am proud of the people of PCC, and their dedication to students and community."

Saltzman became Portland’s newest city commissioner after a victory over Tanya Collier in the November 1998 general election. He cited the "pending workload and city charter provisions relating to (his) election as a Portland City Commissioner" as the reasons for leaving his PCC Board of Directors position.

Saltzman’s departure from the PCC Board after a decade of dedicated service leaves the remainder of his term in Zone 5 open for someone living in that geographical area who wants to influence the policy and budgetary decisions of Portland Community College.

To be eligible, the selected person would need to live in the area encompassing Cedar Mill to the west, Council Crest to the north, the Multnomah and Clackamas county borderline to the south, and 46th Avenue east of Reed College.

Since this position is to finish the term of a sitting board member, the person selected will be appointed by the board. The appointed individual will serve the district until June 2001 and could seek election in March 2001.

Board meetings are held twice a month, generally on the first and third Thursday evenings. Board members receive no pay for their services.

Those interested in being named to the PCC Board of Directors should send a letter stating why they would like to serve and a current résumé to the PCC Public Affairs office, Portland Community College, P.O. Box 19000, Portland, OR 97280-0990. The deadline for receiving letters of interest is Monday, January 25. Candidates for the position will be interviewed in early February.
