Building Construction Program at Rock Creek Helps Habitat for Humanity

Photos and Story by

Portland Community College’s Building Construction Technology program at Rock Creek Campus is building and installing modular walls for a Habitat for Humanity house being built in North Portland.

On May 10, at 9 a.m., students from PCC’s Building Construction 121 class will load the modular sections on a truck and head to the construction site at 3602 N. Albina St. (cross street is Fremont) in Portland to unload the walls and do prep work. On May 14, 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., PCC students will raise the walls of the house. A wall raising ceremony will be held at 1:30 p.m. on site with sponsor Adidas America.

"Habitat is providing the materials for this project through Adidas and PCC is providing the labor," said Joe Johnson, PCC Building Construction Technology instructor and one of the project coordinators. "We are hoping to be able to do this on an annual basis. Mostly we’ve just built structures and torn them down. Now our labor is not going to waste."

"So far, this has been a very positive learning experience for our students," added Bob Steele, an instructor in the Building Construction Technology program who is also coordinating the project. "They feel really good about doing this project for a worthy cause."

Tualatin Valley Builders Supply donated engineering expertise to PCC students for the modular panels.
