David Kish Fills Vacant Zone 3 Seat for PCC Board

Photos and Story by

David Kish was selected by the PCC board from a pool of four candidates to represent Zone 3 of the Portland Community College district. The selection was made at their Oct. 21 board meeting.

Zone 3 covers the eastern border of the PCC district, including portions of Southeast and Northeast Portland.

"The college is entering a critical time," stated Kish. "It is my understanding you will be approaching voters for a major capitol bond measure. It is important to have individuals committed to the organization’s goals and knowledgeable about its workings."

Kish, who served on the board in 1996 and in 1997, and is also a former member of the PCC Foundation board of directors, replaces Roger Buchanan, who died in August.

Kish , the director of general services for the City of Portland since 1988, said that many of his employees benefit from the education and training and upgrade training provided by PCC. As General Services director, Kish manages all of the city’s facilities, real estate, architectural services, construction projects and the financing for those projects. From 1990 to 1992, he served as executive assistant to former Mayor Bud Clark.

Kish has served as a director on various boards, including the PCC Foundation, the Metropolitan Child Care Council, Burnside Projects, Western Interstate Energy, Portland Civic Theater, the Portland Metropolitan Steering Committee and was chair of the Portland Fire & Disability/Retirement board of trustees.

Kish earned a bachelor of arts in political science and economics from the U. of Massachusetts and has done post-graduate study in urban studies and political science.

PCC board members, all volunteers, are elected for four-year terms. When a vacancy occurs mid-term, the board appoints a replacement to fill out the term. Board members must live in the zones they represent.

PCC is the largest post-secondary institution in the state, serving almost 90,000 full and part-time students annually. The 1,500-square-mile district includes all of Washington County and portions of Multnomah, Clackamas, Yamhill and Columbia counties. The college operates three full-service campuses, four work force and learning centers and also holds classes in more than 150 community locations.
