Library Will Have New Millennium for Next Millennium

The Learning Resource Center (LRC) of Portland Community College is pleased to announce that it has signed a contract with Innovative Interfaces, Inc. to install a new, web-based online catalog to be used at all three campus libraries (Cascade, Sylvania and Rock Creek). The version of the software is called, "Millennium," and will replace the present, "Cat-a-Link" system, also known as Dynix. The target date for rolling out the new catalog system is Sept. 1. In conjunction with the new online catalog system, the library will get new computers to complete the system update. The entire system will enable students to find information more quickly while at the library, their home or anywhere they may have web access.

"We’ll be moving from a text-based online system to a web-based system," said Berniece Owen, coordinator of the LRC Technology Services. "One main reason we went to this system was to make it easier for all library users, in particular distance education students and faculty, to have access to library resources. They will still have to come for some things, but they can now do a lot more from home or their office than before."

Other institutions who have implemented Innovative Interfaces Millennium software are the Washington State Law Library, Malmo Schools in Sweden, El Paso Community College in Texas, Emporia State University in Kansas and Singapore Polytechnic. PCC is one of the first secondary institution to use the newly developed Millennium software in the state of Oregon. Having this software gives PCC the opportunity to participate in the Oregon University System’s library resource sharing. For more information about this change, contact Owen at 503-977-4631.
