PCC Senior Studies Institute Welcomes New Members

PORTLAND–Being retired doesn’t mean a senior’s thirst for learning stops. At Portland Community College, senior citizens that want to continue their education can look no further than PCC’s Senior Studies Institute. The organization will welcome new and prospective members with its 10th annual orientation at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 7 in the auditorium at the Central Portland Workforce Training Center, located at 1626 S.E. Water Ave. The orientation is free and open to the public. The featured guest speaker will be Chet Orloff, executive director of the Oregon Historical Society, who will discuss local, regional and national planning for the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Celebration. Orloff is the secretary for the Lewis & Clark Bicentennial in Oregon and is a board member of the National Lewis & Clark Bicentennial Council.
The PCC Senior Studies Institute is a member-run organization that offers a variety of member-led, or taught, classes at four convenient Portland metro area sites. Membership in the institute is $30 per year, which allows members to attend any of the class offerings. Membership can begin at anytime, and guests are always welcomed to attend scheduled classes. The courses for this unique institute include: Big City Mayors, 100 Years of Thomas Wolfe, 100 Years of Kurt Weill, Native American Cultures, Greek Theater, Educational Desegregation, Rivers of the World, Marshall Plan, Great Books and Opera Previews.
