PCC's Northview Gallery to Feature Photograph Series on Human Identity

Photos and Story by

PORTLAND – Portland Community College will feature three local photographers in its opening fall term show titled "Encounters." The exhibit is located in the Northview Gallery on the Sylvania Campus and will open Monday, Oct. 2 and run through Friday, Oct. 27. The exhibit is part of the citywide Photo Americas 2000 Festival, which will run shows in more than 50 Portland galleries, and brings in curators from all over the country, as well as internationally."In encountering the subjects depicted in these works, the viewer is invited to reflect upon some of the ways that we recognize and experience issues of identity," said Colette Walker, the Northview Gallery director. "The identity is glimpsed through expression and gesture, expressed through personal icons and symbols, and experienced through our common humanity."A reception for the artists will be held on Thursday, Oct. 5, from 6 to 9 p.m. in the gallery. The theme of the "Encounters" exhibit is an individual and shared exploration. The photographers are Ray Bidegain, Tamara Lischka and Jan Watten. Watten lives in the Bay Area and her series "Aspects of Identity" presents portraits of friends, friends of friends and acquaintances. Bidegain is a Portland photographer whose portraits capture something of the subject’s essence, and Lischka, also of Portland, has a background in biochemistry as well as photography. Her scientific background comes through in her series "Epikoinos" in which she explores the structural design of the body and its potential for beauty. The gallery is located on PCC’s Sylvania Campus at 12000 S.W. 49th Ave., in the CT Building, room 214.
