Exhibit to Show Transparent Side of Photography

Photos and Story by

SYLVANIA – Portland Community College will host a photographic exhibition titled, "Transparencies,"by PCC visual arts instructor Matthew Kidder in the Northview Gallery on the Sylvania Campus, located at 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. The exhibition will run between Tuesday, Jan. 16 and Thursday, Feb. 22.The images of constructed and found environments are photographed; printed on clear plastic; and layered in between sheets of glass mounted in light-boxes for display. Another section of his exhibit employs still photography, audio, found and manipulated objects, and steel podiums to investigate relationships between art-making, performance, criminal punishment and war."The process of photographic overlay and collage seem particularly relevant to the historical moment we are experiencing,"said Kidder, who has exhibited his work extensively in San Francisco as well as across the U.S. "The work of ?Transparencies’ can be experienced as personalized vignettes extracted from contemporary experience, which are tipped upright, layered and framed in a box."Kidder will give a talk about his work from 2 to 3 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 17 at a Sylvania campus location to be determined. A reception will follow from 3 to 5 p.m. in the Northview Gallery. The gallery’s hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information about this exhibit and where Kidder’s talk will take place; contact Colette Walker, director of the Northview Gallery, at 503-977-8334.
