First African-American Astronaut to Visit PCC's Cascade Campus for camp, book signing

CASCADE CAMPUS – America’s first African-American astronaut will pay a visit to Portland Community College to host a one-day science camp and book signing. Astronaut Mae Jemison will hold the autograph session at 3:30 p.m. on Monday, July 23 in Room 112 of Terrell Hall at the Cascade Campus, located at 705 N. Killingsworth St. It will feature her new autobiography, "Find Where the Wind Goes: Moments From My Life."The signing is open to the public.Jemison will bring her innovative science curriculum to the science camp called, "The Earth We Share Day,"at the campus for 50 middle and secondary students. The students will learn to build critical thinking and problem-solving skills."Having this opportunity to expose kids of little means but big ideals and academic smarts to the successful work and accomplishments of Dr. Jemison gives us great joy,"said State Sen. Margaret Carter, president of the Urban League. "The parents of these kids are excited, as are the kids, for this opportunity and are ready for the challenge and involvement that the TEWS Day will bring."Jemison is the president of The Jemison Group, Inc., a small advanced technology company in Houston, Texas, founder of The Dorothy Jemsion Foundation for Excellence, director of the Jemison Institute for Advancing Technology in Developing Countries, and is a professor of environmental studies at Dartmouth College.The program is based on the Jemison Foundation’s four-week residential camp that has been conducted around the country since 1994 where students come together to solve current world dilemmas. The Urban League of Portland, PCC and The Dorothy Jemison Foundation are sponsoring this event.
