PCC Classes Explore World Cultures and Religion

PORTLAND, Ore. – Three non-credit classes that explore world cultures and religion are being offered winter term by Portland Community College. Classes will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. at Wilson High School, 1151 S.W. Vermont St. Understanding Islam: Religion, Culture and Politics will meet Tuesdays, Jan. 15 through Feb. 19, in Room 128. Instructor Mizra Luqman, president of Rizwan Mosque and a native of Pakistan, will focus on understanding current events as they relate to Islam. Topics to be discussed include the foundation of Islamic beliefs, the interplay of culture, religion and politics, the role of women in Islam, and how interpretations and deviations of Islam have evolved into terrorism and extremist views. Tuition is $34.Tibetan Language and Culture will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 22 through Feb. 12, in Room 222. Participants will examine the Tibetan language as a key to understanding the culture. Tibetan native and scholar Pelsang Gedon, who studied with Panchen Lama in Beijing, will lead the class. Tuition is $34.World Religions: Spirituality Around the World will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 24 through March 7, in Room 207. Instructor George Gray will examine the tenets of Hindu, Buddhist, Celtic, Native American and Christian theologies to help participants gain a greater understanding of their personal spirituality.
