PCC Sets Professional Development Series

LAKE OSWEGO, Ore – A Professional Development Series designed to improve personal and professional relationships is being offered winter term by Portland Community College. The non-credit series will be held from noon to 1 p.m. Wednesdays, Jan. 9 through March 20, at Nature’s Northwest, 17711 S.W. Boones Ferry Road. The series is targeted toward business work teams or individuals with the goal of improving productivity and working relationships. The cost is $10 for the entire series or $2 per session.The series gets under way Jan. 9 with Authentic Motivation. Nike trainer Kevin Carroll will discuss ways to build camaraderie, community, discipline and a sense of purpose by working with a playful attitude and spirit.The Jan. 23 session will deal with Determining the Difference Between Wants and Needs. Therapist Joseph Kurtwright will discuss how, in this era of unlimited wants, people can understand realistic needs in themselves and others, and recognize this potential source of conflict.Instructor Molly Rodriguez will teach approaches to conflict management that convert anger into positive action during One on One Conflict Resolution, set for Feb. 6. Survivor skills necessary during reorganizations and downsizing will be taught by Michael Bishop during the Feb. 20 session, titled Wild Successes: Surviving the Leadership Jungle.The series continues March 6 with Rapport Building Skills. Presenter Don Wright will teach participants how to become aware of their own communication style and offer tips that build rapport and trust.The series concludes March 20 with Overcome the Underminer. Therapist Sher Ireland will discuss what to do when encountering subtle sarcasm, sniping jokes and undermining tactics in the workplace.For more information, contact PCC Community Education at 503-731-6622.
