V-Day 2002 Campaign at PCC to Focus on Domestic Violence

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Portland Community College Sylvania Campus plans to fight violence towards women with an informative event. PCC will be one of 450 campuses around the world to honor V-Day 2002 College Campaign, which highlights the problem of domestic violence. PCC will celebrate this campaign by hosting Eve Ensler’s "The Vagina Monologues"play at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 8-9, and noon on Thursday, Feb. 14 in the Performing Arts Center at Sylvania, located at 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. Admission is $12 for the general public and $7 for students and seniors.The "Vagina Monologues"dives into the mystery, humor, pain, power, wisdom, outrage and excitement buried in women’s experiences. Based on interviews with hundreds of women, from a Long Island antique dealer to a Bosnian refugee, the play brazenly explores questions often pondered, but seldom asked. V-Day 2002 College Campaign aims to end sexual violence against women and to proclaim Valentine’s Day as the day to celebrate women and demand the end of abuse.Inspired by the world premiere at an off-Broadway theater in New York City, the first V-Day was held in 1998 with performances by such stars as Glenn Close, Whoopi Goldberg, Susan Sarandon, Winona Ryder, Lily Tomlin and Calista Flockhart. More than 50 PCC faculty, staff, and students will be involved as actors and theater technicians for this production. Organizers include student advocates Emily Shipp and Krista Geary, both of northwest Portland, and Deborah Evind, coordinator of the Women’s Resource Center at Sylvania. The Sylvania Campus Women’s Resource Center sponsors this event. Proceeds from the play will go towards benefiting Middle Eastern Women’s Empowerment and Resource Center (MEWERC). MEWERC is a grass roots program that addresses the needs of women, from Middle Eastern and Central Asian backgrounds, who seek help on domestic violence issues.
