Media Advisory: PCC-Sylvania Celebrates Women's History Month

SYLVANIA CAMPUS – Portland Community College’s Sylvania Campus Women’s History Month Planning Committee presents a week-long celebration "Women’s Creative Minds."The month of March is women’s history month and the campus will celebrate with a series of educational talks and performances from March 4 to 8. This event is free and open to the public. The Sylvania Campus is located at 12000 S.W. 49th Ave.

Some of the highlights include: Women Student Art Show – From 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., March 4 to 8 in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center. This exhibition features work created by PCC women students and reflects the diversity of disciplines taught in the Sylvania art studios; and Executive Dean’s Reception – From 1 to 2:30 p.m. on March 4 in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center. Alice Jacobson, executive dean of the Sylvania Campus, hosts her annual reception that will include a theater performance by the Illumination Project.

Also, other highlighted events include: "Urban Soul"Spoken Word Poetry, from 11 a.m. to noon on March 6 in the lobby of the Performing Arts Center. Performance poetry by Aisha Ayers, Rochell D Hart, and Brandice Peltier, all of whom have appeared throughout the Northwest at slams, music events; and "Painting Yourself Whole"by Linda Hummer, from 1 to 2:30 p.m. on March 7 in the Oak Room of the CC Building. Hummer, an artist, writer, teacher, activist, and survivor of breast cancer, will discuss the role creative expression has played in her personal journey of healing.

There will also be displays in the CC Building mall throughout the week that will include women in science, history and African-American women role models. For a complete list of events throughout the week, contact the Sylvania Women’s Resource Center at 503-977-8101.
