Art Installation at PCC Gallery Shows Human Relationship with Weather

Photos and Story by

SYLVANIA CAMPUS – A local artist will speak at Portland Community College about her innovative art show that explores human interaction with the weather. Artist Rachel Hibbard will discuss her installation, "Under the Rainbow,"at 2 p.m. on Thursday, April 18 in the Northview Gallery, located in the CT Building of the Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. The exhibit will be on display until Sunday, April 21.The art exhibit is a dynamic installation that involves filling the gallery with an irregular, open framework made of overlapped strips of wood that form a tornado-like pattern. The structure gathers mass at the center to create a funnel shape, expanding as it reaches to the ceiling of the gallery. The installation is to show the unpredictable nature of a tornado and the weather as a metaphor for the beauty and destruction that people experience. The whole installation combines the visual effect of the lattice with a unique sound installation as well as an essay exploring the power of the weather. The gallery hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday. For more information, call 503-977-8017.
