College in Top-100 for Students Getting Associate's Degrees

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Community College ranks 57th among the nation’s two-year colleges in the number of associate’s degrees conferred.According to preliminary information from the U.S. Department of Education from the 2000-01 year, PCC saw its graduating class earn 1,130 associate’s degrees. Of those, 10.1 percent of the students were Asian, 4.3 percent Hispanic and 2.8 percent were African American. The No. 1 college in degrees was Miami-Dade Community College in Florida with 5,253.The number of degrees earned by Asian-Americans at PCC increased by 12.9 percent from the previous year to 114. That number ranks PCC 51st in the nation for associate’s degrees garnered byAsian Americans. The top college in this category is Pasadena City College, which awarded 644 degrees to Asians.PCC also ranks high in another degree category. Of associate’s degrees earned in business administration, PCC ranks 23rd in the country with 260. That number is up slightly from the 1999-00 year by 1.2 percent.The source of this data comes from analysis by Community College Week of U.S. Department of Education statistics.
