Nursing Student Awarded National Scholarship

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland Community College student Donna Barkdoll received a prestigious national scholarship.Barkdoll, a Tigard resident, was one of 350 students who were awarded $1,000 each from the Coca-Cola Two-Year Colleges Scholarship Program. She has maintained a grade-point average of 3.58 while raising three boys, working and actively participating in the community. She is a PCC nursing student with the goal of becoming a nurse practitioner specializing in pediatrics. She also has volunteered for many organizations, including the Boy Scouts of America as a Cub Scout leader.Barkdoll plans to graduate from the PCC nursing program in 2004. "What I enjoy most is interacting with people, sharing what I know and helping them in the process,"said Barkdoll, a single parent. "I understand the importance of a college education and how it will provide a better future for me and for my family. Volunteering allows me to spend quality time with my children and gives me the opportunity to help other families."The Two-Year Colleges Scholarship Program complements the Coca-Cola Foundation’s Scholar’s Program, which awards more than $1.8 million annually in college scholarships to 252 outstanding high school seniors. All recipients demonstrate academic success and complete 100 hours of community service within the past 12 months.
