PCC Partners with ParentCare for Parenting Classes

DOWNTOWN PORTLAND – Portland Community College will join forces with a local nonprofit this fall to deliver affordable, research-based parenting classes to the community. ParentCare Inc. will facilitate three non-credit classes led by a graduate student and a social worker or psychology professional. Parenting the Toddler will tackle the challenge of raising kids during the formative ages of two to four. Instructors will explain why positive parenting techniques can be real assets as kids learn to develop strong opinions, challenge their boundaries and seek independence. Parenting the Child will focus on the unique set of joys and challenges facing parents with kids ages five to eleven. With the baby years over and adolescence a distant concern, parents have the opportunity to connect with their kids through a newly maturing, complex relationship. Parenting the Teen will zero in on communication as the key to managing critical issues like sexuality, peer pressure, substance abuse and academic performance. Parents will discover techniques for sharing values and behavior limits with their teens. All three classes will meet from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 1 through Nov. 19, at Lincoln High School, 1600 S.W. Salmon St. Cost for each class is $75 and includes a textbook.
