Sylvania Campus Hosts Future Teachers Conference

SYLVANIA CAMPUS – Portland Community College plans to help students who want to get a head start on becoming teachers.PCC will host the Future Teachers Conference from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 19 on the Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. High school and college students from across Oregon are invited to attend this first-ever event. PCC President Jesus "Jess"Carreon will kick off the event at the Performing Arts Center, welcoming participants to the college. The event will include workshops and seminars, aimed at community college and high school students considering K-14 teaching careers. Representatives from many of the area’s four-year public and private education institutions will attend. Also, PCC academic advisors will be available to field questions."PCC is hosting a Future Teachers conference to encourage college and high school students to consider and explore a rewarding career in K-14 teaching,"said David Goldberg, division dean of Science and Physical Education. "PCC is committed to assisting our diverse students to plan clear educational pathways that seamlessly lead to teacher certification."Registration forms can be obtained at http://spot.pcc.edu/futureteachers. There is a $28 registration fee that includes breakfast and lunch, all of the workshops, a book bag, T-shirt and the book, "Advising Guide for Future Teachers."The event will be open to the first 400 people.For more information, contact David Goldberg at 503-977-4224.
