TWO ITEMS: Middle East Issues Focus of Hillsboro Lectures

HILLSBORO, Ore. – Local experts will deliver free noontime lectures on Middle East issues this fall at the Hillsboro Library. International and Cross Cultural Education and Understanding, a Portland Community College non-credit series, will take place from noon to 1 p.m. every Tuesday, Oct. 1 through Nov. 5. Kicking off the six-part series is Marylhurst University’s Mona Goode, who will present Islamic Culture as Viewed in the West on Oct. 1. Wajdi Said, executive director of Muslim Educational Trust, speaks about Justice and Peace in Islam on Oct. 8, while Marta Colburn of Mercy Corps discusses Addressing the Roots of Terrorism on Oct. 15. Portland State University’s Aseel Dyck gives a lecture about the History of U.S.-Iraq Relations on Oct. 22, and human rights activist and attorney Tom Nelson talks about Palestine in A Quest for Peace Through Justice in Palestine on Oct. 29 from the perspective of his recent visits. The series concludes Nov. 5 as Bob Horenstein of the Jewish Federation of Portland considers The Israeli-Palestinian Conflict: Is Peace Possible? Portland Community College will help demonstrate how a greater understanding of Islam reveals important underpinnings of many cultures in the world, including our own, in an upcoming non-credit class.Instructor Mona Goode will present Introduction to Islamic Civilization. Students will explore Islam’s similarities with other monotheistic religions and learn how its glorious past contributed to modern-day civilization in Afghanistan, Pakistan, Iraq, Palestine and other parts of the world. The class will meet from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 8 through Nov. 5, in Room S176 at Century High School, 2000 S.W. 234th Ave., Hillsboro. Cost is $40.
