Oregon Supreme Court to Conduct Hearings at PCC

CASCADE CAMPUS – Justice will be served at Portland Community College.The seven justices of the Oregon Supreme Court will make an appearance on Monday, Nov. 4 to conduct three appellate hearings of cases. The justices will meet in Room 122 of Terrell Hall at the Cascade Campus (705 N. Killingsworth St.) for three 40-minute sessions, 9 a.m., 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The hearings are open to the public and seating will be limited. PCC President Jesus "Jess"Carreon and Mildred Ollee, executive dean of the Cascade Campus, will greet the justices before the first session. At the conclusion of each case hearing, the justices will field questions from the audience.The justices will lunch with a group of 10 selected students in the Cascade Campus dining room from 11:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. The justices include Chief Justice Wallace Carson, Jr. and justices Michael Gillette, Robert Durham, Susan Leeson, R. William Riggs, Paul De Muniz and Thomas Balmer."The function of the Oregon Supreme Court coming to the Cascade Campus is to give students and the public an opportunity to have a better understanding of the judicial process by observing,"said Patty Barnett, PCC criminal justice instructor.The first case will be Schlimgen versus May Trucking where arguments will center on a review after a jury has indicated it was deadlocked of verdict-urging instructions in a civil case. The second case will be Oregon Steel Mills Inc. versus Coopers and Lybrand LLP where the justices will hear arguments on the nature of responsibility owed by a firm of independent auditors to its client. The final case of the day will be McNutt, Manelin and Delzer versus Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV). At issue is the 1999 amendments to state law and how they pertain to the validity of an extended revocation period.PCC’s Criminal Justice program at the Cascade Campus is sponsoring this event.
