PCC-Rock Creek Sponsors Hispanic Culture Events

ROCK CREEK CAMPUS – Portland Community College and Chautauqua (Oregon Council for the Humanities) are sponsoring three dynamic events focusing on Hispanic culture. They are free and open to the public. The lectures will take place in Room 114 of Building 3 on the Rock Creek Campus, located at 17705 N.W. Springville Road.The three-day lecture series will start at 11 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 21 with "Curanderismo: A Cultural Perspective on Non-Traditional Hispanic Health Beliefs."Presenter Caroline Urruela de Hess explores the science of healing and the spiritual gifts of Mexican indigenous cultures. From the oral traditions of the ancient Aztec to Mayan cultures, she’ll cover issues relating to mental health, stages of life and the relationship between body and spirit.On Tuesday, Oct. 22, Jim Garcia will host "Raza sin Fronteras: Mexican-American Cultural History,"at 10 a.m. He will perform corridos (ballads), review murals and recite poetry, highlighting examples of the uniqueness of Mexican-American heritage and showcase the diverse indigenous influences that have shaped history.The series will conclude on Wednesday, Oct. 23 with Efrain Diaz-Horna’s lecture on "La Magia de las Palabras: Oregon’s Hispanic Stories,"at 3 p.m. Diaz-Horna will reflect on his experiences as a foreign student, migrant camp resident, social worker, board member, administrator and Oregon citizen. By blending stories and poetry, he provides a thought-provoking dialogue on what it means to be Hispanic in Oregon.This series is made possible by funding from the Oregon Council for Humanities, an affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities.
