PORTLAND, Ore.? On Tuesday, Oct. 8, students at Portland Community College will kick off the REV campaign with a three-campus rally to register voters and provide information about November ballot initiatives and candidates. The campaign is set under the theme, REV Get Registered to Vote, Get Educated on the Issues, Follow Through and Vote. The daylong event will feature a variety of activities, including bands, food, speakers, an open mike, information booths and free or low-cost ($3) "REV"and "I vote because ? I can"T-shirts.The rally will be held on PCC’s three campuses: Sylvania at 12000 S.W. 49th Avenue, in the courtyard of the Performing Arts Center; Rock Creek at 17705 N.W. Springville Road; and at Cascade, 705 N. Killingsworth Street. Events at Sylvania will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the courtyard and from 5 to 6 p.m. inside the CC Building in the upper mall. At Rock Creek and Cascade, events will be held from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.Students have teamed up with several groups, including the Oregon Youth Vote, to provide voter information at the campuses. Each campus will create its own distinctive style for the district-wide event such as Hispanic food and music at Rock Creek, the student debate team and red, white and blue cupcakes at Sylvania, and apple pie and hot dogs (including veggie hot dogs) at Cascade. Even Uncle Sam will be on hand, encouraging people to exercise their right to vote. "We hope to get 1,000 students participating,"said Jesse Lohrke, student body president of the Rock Creek Campus. "In addition, student leaders have coordinated with the Oregon Bus Project, a progressive-minded group that uses a tour bus to engage voters. The bus will travel from campus to campus during the daylong rally, first arriving at Sylvania Campus at 10 a.m. and departing at 10:45 for the Cascade Campus. The bus will be at Cascade for 45 minutes, then depart for the Rock Creek Campus at noon. The bus will leave Rock Creek at 3 p.m. "One of the main goals of the bus project is to involve more young people and students in politics,"said Amanda Mortlock, campus coordinator of the Oregon Bus Project. "We are happy to support the get-out- the-vote effort at PCC and at college campuses across the state."She encourages students to get on the bus on Oct. 8 and ride along to PCC’s campuses.
