Artifacts of Greece, Turkey to Unveil with PCC Class, Trip

PORTLAND, Ore. – Discover the birthplaces of Western art firsthand. Portland Community College will offer fascinating ways to explore Greek and Turkish art both in class and in person through upcoming offerings. In Art and Architecture of Greece and Islam, the ancient world will come alive through artifacts. With slides, learn about art beginning with the Minoan and Mycenaean civilizations and understand the foundation of Western art. Then discover the archaic and classical forms of Greek art, and the unique art of the Byzantine Ottoman and Islamic treasures. Art history professor Susanne Tringali leads the course, an excellent preparation for travel to Greece or Turkey. The class will meet from 6:30 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 28 through Feb. 18, in Room 222 of Wilson High School, 1151 S.W. Vermont St. Cost is $45. Greece and Turkey: Art of the Ancient World is the title of a PCC summer educational trip offered June 19 through July 3. Tringali will lead the excursion, which begins in Istanbul, continues through the Greek islands and concludes in Athens. Cost is $3,950 and includes airfare from Portland, hotels, entrance fees and some meals. More details about the trip will be shared in a free information session held from 7 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21, in Room 222 of Wilson High School, 1151 S.W.
