Experience Tibet with Classes and Educational Trip

PORTLAND, Ore. – Experience Tibet and expand your mind with a larger world-view. This winter, Portland Community College will offer non-credit classes led by Tashi Tsering, a Tibetan living in exile and an activist in Tibetan affairs. The classes offer insight into Tibet in preparation for a PCC trip in which students can experience this beautiful yet tragic culture firsthand.Travel Tibet with PCC, a free informational session, will be held in preparation for an educational excursion to Tibet slated for August 2003. Participants will gain an overview of trip features such as sacred temples and palaces, visits with a Tibetan family and religious monks, as well as what it’s like to gain a firsthand understanding of the political and spiritual forces at play in Lhasa. The session also explains trip details including an optional extension for trekking Tibet’s mountain paths. The session will be held from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Saturday, Jan. 11, at PCC’s Central Portland Workforce Training Center, 1626 S.E. Water Ave.Tibetan History and Culture will give students an understanding of Tibetan historical context and current way of life. The class will emphasize the beauty of this unique culture, while offering insight into the geography and environment as well as the complex tragedy of the current political situation. Instructor Tsering will also feature ways you can get involved to help in Tibet’s plight. The class will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Tuesdays, Jan. 28 through March 18, in Room 103 of Wilson High School, 1151 S.W. Vermont. Cost is $66.Tibetan Buddhism will explore the rich spiritual quality that is unique to Tibet. Learn the Tibetan forms of Buddhism, it’s history and practice today, and the life and teaching of the Dalai Lama. This class is also recommended as a preparation for travel, and will be held from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. Thursdays, Jan. 30 through March 20, in Room 102 of Wilson High School, 1151 S.W. Vermont.
