PCC displays 'Crowd Control'

SYLVANIA CAMPUS – Portland Community College’s Northview Gallery will show "Crowd Control,"an art exhibit by two area artists.This interesting mixed media and installation exhibit by artists Linda Hutchins and Mark Smith explores the danger, complexity and beauty of temporary spaces. The Northview Gallery (12000 S.W. 49th Ave.) will run from Feb. 24 through Friday, March 21.For "Crowd Control,"Hutchins created a wall installation (10 by 46 feet), which was woven onsite by stapling plastic barricade tape to the wall and weaving it in place like a giant place mat. The yellow and red colors of the tape combine to form an image seen most clearly at a distance. "I am interested in the ?something’ that lurks beneath the surface of common, everyday objects and situations,"Hutchins explains.Smith used a modified collage approach to painting by compressing clothing and organic matter within transparent membranes that unifies the collective materials. "Temporary communities are compelling phenomena as poetic markers, because they call to mind an accelerated version of time,"Smith said.Northview Gallery hours are from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday through Friday.
