Journalism teacher offers class for adult writers

PORTLAND, Ore. – For the past 20 years, Ellen Spitaleri has been motivating aspiring young journalists at Lake Oswego High School. Now retired from the school district, she intends to bring it to the community. This fall, adults can learn the craft of journalism writing from this veteran teacher through a non-credit class offered by Portland Community College.If you’ve ever been interested in reporting for a newspaper, or having your own regular column appear in a publication, Journalism: Beginning is an excellent opportunity to learn which steps to take. Spitaleri will offer hands-on experience with writing news, feature and opinion pieces, and include local writers as guest speakers. Students will interview a professional reporter, take a field trip to a local restaurant and write a review, draft a letter to the editor and more. The goal of each student is to submit a written piece.The eight-week class will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Mondays, Sept. 29 through Nov. 17, in Room 102 of Wilson High School, 1151 S.W.
