Photos and Story by

PORTLAND, Ore. – Spend a Saturday getting your hands dirty. Taking an upcoming Portland Community College class may leave you tired and sore, but you’ll come away with a beautiful piece of garden furniture that you can immediately place in your yard, garden, patio, deck or even inside your home.Building Willow Furniture, a non-credit class, is your opportunity to create a rustic garden bench, table, fern stand, or trellis. Instructor Brian Phillips is a patient, knowledgeable teacher who can bring out the best in students of all levels, including absolute beginners. Students will leave this class with a piece of hand-made furniture, and the basics to dabble on their own with the indigenous trees in the area."I’ve never felt better after taking a class. The deep sense of accomplishment at having made my own furniture lasted for days,"said former student Anna Villines. "My friends love the pieces I’ve made and can’t believe I did them on my own."The one-day class will be held twice during the term: Saturday, Oct. 4, and Saturday, Nov. 15. Both classes will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 113 of the Communication Technology Building at PCC’s Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. Cost is $39, plus $75 paid to the instructor for materials. For more information, contact PCC Community Education at 503-731-6642.
