Church history comes alive with eastern monasticism

Photos and Story by

PORTLAND, Ore. – Centuries of rich tradition and belief have shaped the Christian church of today. Now a new non-credit class offered by Portland Community College delves into a particularly influential period of church history: early eastern monasticism. Desert Fathers of Eastern Monasticism will bring the lives of monastics in the early Greek east into focus and reveal how these pioneers influenced the thinking of the early Christian church. Instructor James Karagas will show how these "fathers of the desert" reached spiritual heights by reciprocating God’s love in relationship to neighbor and creature. The six-week class will be held from 7 to 9 p.m., Tuesdays, Sept. 28 through Nov. 2 at Grant High School, 2245 NE 36th St. Cost is $85.
