Create art as inspired by Alberta Street with PCC series

PORTLAND, Ore. – Celebrate the emerging art scene on Alberta Street with a hands-on creative experience. A new non-credit series offered by Portland Community College offers classes in artists’ working studios and galleries, where new ideas and artists are giving rise to some of the city’s most exciting work. The Art on Alberta Series features six classes, all held in Alberta Street studios and led by local artists. Class topics are as follows:" Art Collecting on Alberta. With a tour through Alberta’s innovative galleries and studios, ONDA Gallery owner Allan Oliver will explain the criteria for building an art collection. Discover how to budget, select and display art expressing personal individuality. The two-hour class will meet from 10 a.m. to noon Saturday, Oct. 2, at the ONDA Gallery, 2215 N.E. Alberta. Cost is $24." Felting. Wool is the perfect fiber for Northwest winters. Learn basic felt techniques by creating your own hat, mittens or slippers. Start with raw wool from local sheep to create your own design project. The three-part class will meet from 6:15 to 9 p.m. Tuesdays, Oct. 5 through Oct. 19, at LP Studio, 2926 N.E. Killingsworth St. Cost is $57 and includes all supplies." Dye Your Own Wool. Dye your finished felt project, choosing from bright to muted colors. No finished project to dye? Dye a pound of carded wool for future felt projects. The class will meet from 6:15 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 26, at LP Studio, 2926 N.E. Killingsworth St. Cost is $24." Mosaic Glass Stepping Stones. All artists and "non-artists" are welcome to take this fun class. Create a beautiful mosaic stepping stone using stained glass and sturdy concrete. The two-part class will be offered twice this fall: the first class will be held from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 7, and from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 14. The second class will be held from noon to 3 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 6, and from noon to 1:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 13. Both classes will take place at Glass Roots Mosaic, 2921 N.E. Alberta St. Cost is $46 and includes all tools and materials." Wire Sculpture. Work in the artist’s studio to create a 3D wire sculpture. Learn to build the armature, and gain techniques to twist, sculpt and affix wires and tie by hand. Bring needle nose pliers with cutter. The two-part class will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturdays, Oct. 9 and Oct. 16, at Kaspar Art Studio, 5303 N.E. 29th. Cost is $57 and includes wire supplies." Mexican Paper Sculpture: Authentic Latin Art. Work with artist Armando Olveda to learn Mexican sculpture for Day of the Dead. Learn to use colors as a Latin artist, create a form, and paint and complete a project. The one-day class will meet from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 30, at Olveda Art Studio, 3713 N. Michigan.
