Find medicinal herbs growing in your neighborhood

Photos and Story by

PORTLAND, Ore. – You don’t have to visit a natural foods store to find medicinal herbs, in fact, you don’t even have to leave your block. A new class offered by Portland Community College shows how to identify, gather and use herbs that grow right in your urban neighborhood. Herbs in the Hood, a non-credit class, offers a first-hand look at grassroots herbalism. Instructor Lois Beran will discuss the potent properties of many plants easily overlooked as weeds and teach you how to find and prepare them for your family’s healthcare needs. A walk in nearby Forest Park will follow classroom discussion. The one-day class will meet from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Zimmerman Community Center, 916 N.W. Lovejoy. Cost is $24.
