PORTLAND, Ore. – Put your Spanish language skills to work by helping others navigate through our complicated and sometimes intimidating court system. Portland Community College is offering a new program in legal interpreting that can help launch your career. Fundamentals of Legal Interpreting is the first in a series of classes to be offered throughout the year. Completing the full program will earn you a certificate and prepare you for the State of Oregon’s exam to become a professional legal interpreter. Whether you are a Spanish speaker with no interpreting experience or an interpreter with little formal training, PCC’s program will teach you the building blocks. Instructor Vanesa Pancic-Meier will discuss how skills like analyzing, summarizing, paraphrasing, listening and shadowing can be used to help ensure that a person involved in the court system will be fully understood. The seven-week class will meet from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturdays, Oct. 2 through Nov. 13, at PCC’s Central Portland Workforce Training Center, 1626 S.E. Water Ave. Cost is $159. For more information, contact PCC Community Education at 503-731-6642.
