AmeriCorps volunteers help restore campus creeks

SYLVANIA CAMPUS – The Sylvania Campus of Portland Community College will host a team of AmeriCorps volunteers to perform restoration work done in North and South Upper Ball Creeks.The campus has needed restoration work on its natural habitat around the creeks to make them livable for fish. The work includes pulling of ivy and blackberry bushes as well as pruning of holly and hawthorn shrubs. The AmeriCorps volunteers will be doing work from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 29 and Monday, Nov. 1. They will be joined by PCC biology instructor April Ann Fong, who set up the visit.The AmeriCorps, usually recent college graduates, receive unique experiences, a living stipend, various training, insurance, and an educational allowance for the future in exchange for their time.
