Media Advisory: PCC-Cascade to christen new buildings today

What: Portland Community College’s Cascade Campus launches a new era for students and the community with a dedication and grand opening celebration for three new buildings, highlighted by PCC’s Fire Science students rappelling off the new fire training tower; jazz vocalist Mary Kadderly; and State Sen. Margaret Carter. The public is invited.When: The grand opening is slated for 3 to 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 20. The dedication ceremony begins at 3:30 p.m.Where: The grand opening will be held under a 30×40-foot tent in front of the new Cascade Campus Public Services Education Building, located on the corner of North Killingsworth Street and North Mississippi Avenue. Who: In addition to Sen. Carter, other speakers include PCC Board of Directors Dana Anderson (chair) and Harold Williams (vice chair); PCC District President Preston Pulliams; PCC-Cascade Campus Student Body president Samantha Lelo; and James Sager, Education and Workforce Advisor for Gov. Kulongoski. Algie Gatewood, Cascade Campus president, will serve as emcee. There will be tours of the new buildings and demonstrations at each site following the dedication ceremony. A jazz trio will play at the event. Why: The buildings – Physical Education, Technology Education and Public Services Education – are part of the ambitious $60 million expansion project for PCC’s urban north Portland campus. They will dramatically increase access and opportunities for students in the revitalized north Portland neighborhoods.
