PORTLAND, Ore. – Regardless of one’s religious background, one element of spirituality seems to transcend all cultures: the desire for peace and tranquility. This spring, a non-credit Buddhism class, offered by Portland Community College, can offer hints about how to gain serenity during life’s mayhem by exploring the application of Buddhist values to your own life.Buddhism: An Introduction will shed light on traditional Buddhist concepts such as Karma, the four noble truths and the nature of the mind. Instructor Michael Conklin will lead students in discussion about the relevancy of Buddhism in contemporary life and issues. Students will practice concepts on their own with optional "homework" in meditation exercises. The four-week class will be held from 7 to 8:50 p.m. Tuesdays, April 5 through April 26, at the PCC Sylvania Campus, 12000 S.W. 49th Ave. Cost is $39.
