Turn trash into handmade paper with new PCC series

PORTLAND, Ore. – Do you love the look of handmade paper, but dont want to pay the high price? Are you crafty and looking for a new avenue to express yourself? A new Portland Community College non-credit series offers an opportunity to turn ordinary household items into handmade specialty papers and provides endless opportunities for creative expression.Beginning in April, Handmade Papers Series will teach how to make beautiful, handmade papers for cards, small gift boxes and art projects. Instructor Sierra Briano will lead the series in Room 103 at Riverdale High School, 9727 S.W. Terwilliger Blvd. Sign up for the entire series for $114 or an individual class for $64. Classes are as follows:Handmade Papers with Natural Fibers. Learn to incorporate natural materials into the paper itself. First, meet to learn how to make paper pulp, and then continue the next day to create the papers and pull the sheets. The two-part class will meet from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday, April 1, and from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 2.Handmade Paper Using Recycled Material. Add color and creativity with scrap office paper, wrapping, egg cartons, and more. Students are asked to bring recyclables to class. The class will meet from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Saturday, April 9.Sculpting with Handmade Paper. Create form by using handmade papers and adding sticks, bones, feathers and found natural and decorative objects.
