Anti-racism activist to speak out at Cascade Campus

CASCADE CAMPUS – Nashville-based anti-racism activist, author and speaker Tim Wise is coming to Portland Community College.Wise will speak from 1 to 2 p.m. on Tuesday, May 17 in Terrell Hall 122 at the Cascade Campus, 705 N. Killingsworth St. "His considerable rhetorical skills, his fluid literary gifts and his relentless search for the truth make him a critical ally in the fight against racism and a true soldier in the war for social justice," said Michael Eric Dyson, professor of African-American and Religious Studies University of Pennsylvania, on Wises Web site (timwise.org). Wise has spoken to more 75,000 people in 46 states on more than 300 college campuses and to hundreds of community groups. He has trained labor, government, corporate and law enforcement officials on methods for battling racism in their institutions. From 1999 to 2003, Wise served as an advisor to the Fisk University Race Relations Institute and in the early 1990s was an associate director of the Louisiana Coalition Against Racism and Nazism. Wise received the 2001 British Diversity Award for best feature essay on race issues. He has a bachelor’s degree in political science from Tulane University. This event is co-sponsored by Speak Out, which is the Institute for Democratic Education and Culture.
