Photos and Story by

Nicole Howie

Nicole Howie attends Johns Hopkins University and is working on her master’s degree in computer technology, specializing in helping end-users. The northeast Portland resident came to Portland from Seattle to attend PCC for her transfer degree in 2000.

"I wanted be away from home and wanted to live in Portland and ended up at PCC," she said. "They had more classes that fit what I needed."

Howie attended PSU for a year before finishing her bachelor’s degree in an exchange program at Bowie State University. From there she was able to win entrance to Johns Hopkins, where she works in the school’s computer lab as an assistant. She said going to PCC helped turn her in the right direction.

"Being able to pick all general transfer classes prepared me for what was to come at Bowie State and Johns Hopkins," she said. "Before PCC, I was just playing around and was unfocused but was able to become a serious student at PCC."

Howie said her favorite memories are of Bryan Hull’s English class and working at the women’s resource center. She provided support and enjoyed the human interaction, which is now helping her in her computer technology classes at Johns Hopkins.

"I’m glad I decided to go to PCC," Howie said. "It’s a stepping stone and helps you become a serious student."
