Rock Creek collection highlights Northwest art

Photos and Story by

PORTLAND, Ore. – The Rock Creek Gallery at Portland Community College has a brand new space and a brand new exhibit. Bill Rhoades, a PCC alumnus, is showcasing his own personal collection, "Works of Art on Paper," from Monday, Oct. 17 through Dec. 10 at the gallery, located in Room 122 of Building 3 at 17705 N.W. Springville Road. The exhibit is a compilation of works by various Northwest artists. There will be a special reception for Rhoades from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 4. It will be a chance for the community to view the 20-piece collection, meet some of the collections artists and see the recently renovated gallery space. Rhoades has been fascinated by Northwest art for many years and has acquired works from 1956-1996 by some of the most important artists in the region. The exhibition includes prints and drawings by Mark Tobey, Guy Anderson, Sally Haley, Hilda Morris, Michele Russo, George Johanson, Manuel Izquierdo and Jack McLarty. The themes of his collection include the representation of landscape and the human figure, and strong sense of place, light, space and geography. Rock Creek Gallery hours are 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m. to noon on Saturday. For more information, visit the gallerys Web site at: spot.pcc.edu/rockcreekgallery.
