PCC's Moore receives regional interpreter award

Julie Moore, interpreter training instructor, earned the Interpreter Educator Award from the Registry of Interpreter for the Deaf, the national professional organization and certifying body for sign language interpreters in the United States. The award recognizes Moore’s shaping the profession of interpreting while touching the lives of hundreds of students with her support.
The award is from RID’s Region V, which includes Alaska, Arizona, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, Washington and British Columbia. Moore couldn’t attend the conference, where the award was announced. But she was surprised during class with an impromptu awarding of her distinction.
“I finished videotaping students for an evaluation and dismissed the finger spelling class about five minutes early, thinking the students would be happy to have extra minutes on a sunny afternoon,” she said. “But they didn’t leave! I asked why they were hanging around, and a few came up and began asking me questions I’d already answered. After a few minutes of this, the door opened, and in came the President of the Oregon Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf Tina Buchanan, my colleague Darcie LeMieux, and our Division Dean, Dave Stout. Tina presented the award to me there. I was overwhelmed, and am extremely grateful to all the students past and present who made it possible.”
