Gatewood heads group dedicated to reducing diesel emissions

Photos and Story by

Algie Gatewood, Cascade Campus president, is part of a diverse group tackling diesel emission issues in north Portland through an Oregon Solutions project designated by Governor Ted Kulongoski. This collaborative group is working to find ways to reduce diesel emissions from heavy road, rail, and marine traffic as well as from off-road construction equipment. Diesel emissions contribute to asthma and other health problems experienced by residents in this part of Portland.

Taking part in an effort to promote voluntary actions are fuel providers, trucking companies, garbage and recycling haulers, Oregon Departments of Environmental Quality (DEQ) and Transportation (ODOT), City of Portland, Multnomah County Health Department, Environmental Justice Action Group, Coalition for a Livable Future, and Oregon Environmental Council.

Gov. Kulongoski designated this as the Oregon Solutions North Portland Diesel Emissions Reduction Project and appointed Gatewood and Carl Talton of Portland Family of Funds as co-conveners. For more information, visit Oregon Solutions (http://www.orsolutions.org).
